We edit and proofread all types of documents, from company reports, theses, training course material and letters, to general non-fiction works, novels and short stories. This can range from proofreading – concentrating on grammar, spelling and punctuation – to a medium edit that also eliminates jargon and clarifies the message of your document, to a full structural edit. Whether your proofreading or editing project is small or large, web-based, business-related or personal, Cre8ive Words will revise your written work so it meets a high standard of English expression and readability.

Professional Writing

Publishers and literary agents won’t waste their valuable time wading through articles, draft manuscripts (fiction and non-fiction) or short stories that are riddled with spelling, punctuation or grammatical errors – so give your work its best chance for publication.

Academic Assistance

Perfect presentation lifts marks and helps achieve top grades, and assignments, essays, reports, theses and research papers shouldn’t be submitted for critique without thorough academic editing. As well as spelling and punctuation, we advise on content, style, format and expression, so now there’s no excuse for handing in less-than-perfect work.

Training Course Material

Show your professionalism by ensuring your assessments, certificates, course notes, evaluation forms, handouts, lesson plans, manuals, online help information, outlines, participant/facilitator guides, presentations and slide show text are presented in plain English and free from errors.

Self-publication

Cre8ive Words specialises in helping aspiring writers who want to self-publish but need a professional manuscript editing service for their novels, memoirs, family histories, genealogical reports, autobiographies, biographies, etc.

Business and Corporate Documentation

Advertising copy, agendas, bids, proposals, brochures, business plans, invitations, flyers, forms, legal documents, letters, reports, marketing material, newsletters, policies and procedures, presentations, press releases, promotional aids, requests for tender, technical manuals, templates: editing and proofreading form an important step when producing commercial and corporate documentation, and mistakes may go unnoticed without editorial checks.

Websites

Your website may be the first point of contact for potential customers, so it’s essential that it conveys the right impression about you and your business. Cre8ive Words will check your website for spelling, punctuation, grammar and typographical errors, make suggestions to improve your website copy and ensure the content is suitable for the intended audience. We also check that hyperlinks are up-to-date and working.

Job Assistance - Résumé and Cover Letter Writing

Cre8ive Words shows you writing tools that will help you land that perfect job. Your résumé is the most important tool you have to sell yourself to a future employer, and you have about 30 seconds in which to impress. We can help polish and tweak your words to ensure they reflect your professionalism and suitability for the job you are applying for. Meanwhile, your cover letter is not a job application – it’s a short personal specific letter that introduces you, highlights your employability in regards to the relevant position (skills, experience or achievements) and encourages the reader to discover more about you through your résumé. We will:

  • help revamp an old résumé or work history into a new, professional document
  • edit poorly written statements
  • ensure relevant accomplishments are included and non-relevant information is removed
  • use the best words to convey your message
  • ensure the tone of your application is appropriate
  • edit your text to eliminate ambiguity, tautology, verbosity and jargon, as well as errors in spelling, punctuation and grammar
  • enhance the readability of your text and check for consistency
  • reformat the layout so your work looks attractive and professional

Editing and Proofreading Options

There are several levels of editing from which to choose.

Option1: Basic Proofreading

If you're a confidant writer and happy with the content and style of your document, but need a professional eye to check for minor typographical, spelling or punctuation errors, this is the service for you. Cre8ive Words will locate and rectify.

  • incorrect spelling, punctuation and grammar
  • typographical errors
  • inconsistencies, such as in the use of capital letters, font styles and sizes, headings, page numbers, index entries, etc.
  • incorrect word usage, such as compliment instead of complement
  • incorrect cross-referencing

Option2 - Copy (Line) Editing

Copy editing is a more advanced level of editing than a basic proofread, and the copy editor’s task is to make text clear, correct, concise, complete and consistent – in other words, it should say what it means and mean what it says.

This option provides a careful vetting of expression and style, changes in tense and continuity glitches ... all those faults and bad habits new writers are often blind to in their own work. As well as including all Option 1 tasks, our copy editing service will:

  • eliminate unnecessary words, jargon, clichés and awkward phrasing
  • replace long, over-used or repetitious words with more appropriate ones
  • improve sentence/paragraph structure by shortening long, unwieldy sentences
  • query ambiguous statements and suggest changes so content is not misunderstood
  • set up a consistent style regarding terminology, spelling, capitalisation, hyphenation, abbreviations and numbers
  • set up a continuous and suitable format – page layout, headings, figures, tables and captions
  • where possible, check that the facts within the document are consistent and correct
  • give ideas may be given on how to lengthen or shorten the work to fit limits and layout requirements
  • check that all references and the bibliography are complete and accurate
  • implement a consistent style if more than one writer is involved

Option 3: Structural Editing Only

A structural edit concentrates on the flow, style, structure, logical order and consistency of a document. Is the overall work easy to understand and use? Does it make sense? Is it accessible to the reader, user-friendly and simple to navigate? In order to achieve clarity, does it need some rewording and restructuring?

If it’s a work of fiction, we provide feedback on character description and development, motivation and believability, viewpoint, conflict, dialogue, setting, emotion, theme and plotting. In a work of non-fiction we assess whether the document fulfils its purpose, if there is a need for additional material such as an introduction glossary or index or whether the content needs rearranging into more logical order. We will also:

  • rearrange and rewrite sentences/paragraphs to improve clarity and flow of text
  • ensure the structure is logical by reorganising chapters, sections or paragraphs to improve the order and readability of the text, if necessary
  • make sure the language is appropriate for the intended readership, by using plain English and eliminating wordiness, redundancies and inappropriate jargon
  • query and consult with the author about any other problems found in the text

Option 4: Structural Edit Plus Copy Edit

This is the most detailed editing option and it includes all tasks for Options 1, 2 and 3.
